Das absolute Hipster-Piece: DDR Militär-Backpack

Heute stelle ich euch diesen Rucksack vor. Er hat eine interessante Hintergrundgeschichte, ist nett zu eurem Geldbeutel - und besonders toll, wenn ihr auf der Suche nach einer Alternative zu den teuren und mies-produzierten Adidas-Backpacks seid, mit denen die anderen coolen Studenten so herumlaufen.

Today I would like to introduce you to this backpack. There's an interesting background story to it, is nice to your bank account - and especially awesome if you're on the  hunt for  an alternative to the expensive and unethically- produced  Adidas-backpacks that  all the  other cool students are carrying around.

Die gefühlt ewig-andauernde Suche nach einem Rucksack aus 2. Hand, der nicht zu groß und nicht zu klein, nicht zu teuer aber trotzdem von guter Qualität ist, und gleichzeitig meinen ästhetischen Eigenheiten entspricht, ist für mich endlich vorbei.

Ich fühle mich, als hätte ich ein Brett vor'm Kopf gehabt - warum habe ich nie vorher daran gedacht, dass Militär-Ausrüstung allgemein eigentlich alle meine Ansprüche erfüllen kann? Logischerweise werden Dinge wie diese so produziert, dass sie praktisch sind und  jeglichem Wind und Wetter standhalten. Richtig günstig wird es dann, wenn man alte Armee-Bestände auf Ebay findet. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um ein Original "Sturmgepäck" der Nationalen Volksarmee (NVA) der DDR. 

The endless search for a secondhand backpack that isn't too big and not too small, not expensive but still of good quality and at the same time lines with my aesthetic-standards, is finally over for me. I feel a little bit stupid for not seeing this before - how didn't I realize that items made for the military can fulfill all my expectations? Obviously these things are produced in a way to be practical and to withstand all weather conditions. It's starting to get really affordable when you can find old army-stocks on ebay. In this case I'm talking about an original so-called "Sturmgepäck" of the "Nationale Volksarmee" or "NVA" in short (transl. National People's Army) that was part of the east-german DDR state.

Der Rucksack und das Tragegestellt kamen unbefestigt bei mir an, sie lassen sich jedoch relativ einfach miteinander verbinden. Man legt zunächst das Gestell so auf die Rückseite des Rucksacks, sodass der graue Kreis in der Mitte liegt, 2 Gurte zur Seite auslaufend, der 3. nach unten hin. Die Ösen der Schultergurte müssen oben an den Karabiner-Hacken befestigt werden, die Ringe der unteren Enden werden unten eingehakt. 

Außerdem empfehle ich, die Haken an der Unterseite des Rucksacks nach dem Einhaken der Gurte mit einem Hammer zu bearbeiten und so etwas enger zu machen, damit sie sich nicht sofort wieder lösen. Da kommt es aber ganz darauf an, ob ihr das Sturmgepäck wirklich nur als Rucksack oder auch als Fahrradtasche nutzen möchtet - in diesem Fall wäre es cool, das Tragegestell einfach wieder abnehmen zu können. 

An dieser Stelle merkt man besonders, dass original für Soldaten gedacht war. An den Schultergurten gibt es jeweils ein zweites Band mit einem Metallhaken am Ende, genau wie an dem 3., mittlerem Gurt. Diese waren für die DDR-Soldaten zur Befestigung an ihrem Gürtel gedacht. Da ich aber keine Soldatin bin und für den blutigen Kampf im Uni-Alltag keinen Militär-Gürtel benötige, habe ich die Doppelstreifen der Armgurte zusammengeknotet und den mittleren Gurt an der Unterseite des Rucksackes festgenäht. Solltet ihr dies auch versuchen wollen, müsst ihr aber wirklich vorsichtig sein, da das Material des Rucksackes extrem fest und nur schwer zu durchstechen ist. Ihr könnt die überflüssigen Gurte natürlich auch einfach abschneiden, aber ich pesönlich wollte nicht, dass der Rucksack irgendetwas von seinem Charme verliert.

Das einzig negative an diesem Tragegestell ist, dass man die Schulter-Riemen nicht wirklich verstellen kann. Jedoch kann man auch einfach eigene Riemen daran befestigen. Die Halter-

ungen dafür sind ja vorhanden!

The backpack and the carrier frame didn't came attached to each other in the mail, but they're relatively easy to put together. First, you lay the frame flat on the backside of the backpack so that the circle piece lies in the middle, with two straps going to the sides and one strap going down. The  two shoulder straps need to be attached to the carabiner hooks at the top of the backpack, while the eyelets at the bottom of the straps are put into the hooks at the bottom of the backpack. I recommend you to work on those ones carefully with a hammer to make them a bit more narrow, so that the straps don't keep falling out. But it depends on wether you want to use this as a backpack only or as a bicycle bag, too - for the latter, you won't need the carrier frame and might want to be able to take it off again.

Now comes the part where you can really see that this thing was originally made for soliders. The shoulder straps are actually doubled, and the 2nd "branch" so to speak, has another hook attached to it. So does the 3rd big strap that's going down from the middle. These hooks were made for the DDR-soldiers to attach to their belts. But since I am no soldier - at least I don't need a belt for my bloody daily fight @ uni - I knotted the double straps together and sewed the 3rd strap to the bottom of the backpack. If you're planning on doing so too, please be very careful, for the material being very stirdy and hard to stitch through. You could also just cut off the unnessecary straps, but I personally didn't want to loose any of the charme the backpack's got to it.

The only real downside about these suspenders is that they are not really adjustable. But you could just take your own straps and use those, since the hooks on the backpack can be used to attach various different kinds of carrying apparatuses.

Wie ihr sehen könnt, hat der Rucksack oben und an beiden Seiten angenähte Schlaufen, durch die jeweils ein graues Plastik-Band gezogen ist. Dies diente dazu, eine Zeltplane auf dem Rucksack befestigen und kompakt auf dem Rücken transportieren zu können. Auch diese können ganz einfach abgenommen werden. Ich finde jedoch, dass sie einfach zu dem Teil dazugehören und auch sehr praktisch sind, um meinen XXL-Schal zu befestigen, wenn es plötzlich zu warm dafür wird.

As you can see, there are strips sewed to the top and the sides of the backpack, and grey plastic-bands pulled through them. These were used to carry a tent on top of the backpack, but can easily be removed. I find that they kinda just belong to this item, and can be very practical to carry my XXL-scarf when it's getting too hot outside.

Ein kleines Plastikfenster, in denen früher die Nummern der Soldaten ihren Platz fanden. Ich were es wohl für vegane Propaganda-Sprüche nutzen, oder so was in der Art. / A tiny plastic window, originally made for displaying the solider's number. I might use it to display vegan propaganda or something.

So sehen die Hacken zum Schließen der Klappe aus. Manchmal etwas nervig, wenn man schnell etwas herausholen möchte, andererseits aber auch für potentielle Diebe nicht einfach zu öffnen. / This is how the closing-hooks look like. Can be a little annoying if you want to open it when in a hurry, but on the other hand - they're also not easy to open for potential thiefs, so...

Nun kommen wir zum Innenleben dieses Exemplares. Am oberen Rand befinden sich 3 Klappen, die seitlichen mit einem Schließmechanismus, die den Inhalt vor fremden Griffen in den Rucksack schützen können. Ich bin aber meist zu faul, um sie zu schließen, hehe. Der Rucksack könnte aber etwas zu offen sein, wenn ihr ihn nicht fest genug schließt, also gebt Acht.

Now  let's take a look at the insides of this one. First of all,  it has 3 folds, 2 of which have a closing  mechanism. This can safe you from foreign grabs for your belongings. But I have to admit, I'm often too lazy to close them, hehe. The backpack could be a little too-open though if you don't close it tight enough, so please be careful.

Die Innenseite ist komplett mit Plane ausgekleidet. Naja, vor dem Auslaufen eurer Trink-flasche schützt das nicht, aber zumindest kann von Außen nichts nass werden. Zur Öffnung hin waren sogar noch längere Planenstücke befestigt, die ich aber abgeschnitten habe, da sie mich gestört haben. 

Ansonsten lässt sich zur Größe des Rucksacks nur sagen, dass sie für meine Zwecke einfach verdammt perfekt geeignet ist. Mein Tablet-PC, gefühlt-10-Brotdosen und alles weitere für die Uni und das Alltagsleben passt super rein. Er ist aber gleichzeitig nicht zu groß, um in die volle Straßenbahn zu passen, und fühlt sich auf dem Rücken bequem an.

The  insides  are  completely covered in thick tarp. Well, this doesn't safe your stuff  from going  wet when your drinking bottle starts leaking, but at least they can't get wet from the outside. Around the opening the tarp even extended,but I cut it off because it annoyed me.

About the space itself I can just say how damn perfect it is for my purposes. My tablet-pc, way-too-many bread boxes and everything else for Uni and everyday life fits in there amazingly. At the same time, it's not too big to fit into the crowed subway, and feels nice when carried, in my opinion.

Wo kaufen / Preis?

Wenn mein endloses Gelabere euch überzeugt hat, wollt ihr sicher wissen wo ich das Teil gekauft habe, bzw. wo ihr es herbekommen könnt. Undzwar habe ich c.a. 50 Seiten von gebrauchten Rucksäcken auf Ebay durchforstet, und bin währenddessen immer mal wieder auf Angebote gestoßen, die diese NVA-Sturmgepäcke anbieten. 

Also habe ich den Begriff einfach mal in die Suchleiste eingegeben und mir eines der zahlreichen Angebote ausgesucht. Anscheinend gibt es von diesen Rucksäcken noch große Restbestände! Die sind wohl damals nicht  von der Mauer bergraben worden...*ba dumm disch*. Ähem, auf jeden Fall habe ich mir natürlich das günstigste ausgesucht. [Not sponsered, leider] Bei dem Händler bundeswehr-und-mehr_de habe ich 4,95€ für den Rucksack und 4,90€ für den Versand bezahlt, also insgesamt knapp 10€. Versendet hat der Shop das Ganze im Packet, und es kam pünktlich an. Aber auch die anderen Händler sahen vertrauenswürdig aus und hatten gute Bewertungen, also habt ihr freie Auswahl. Auf Amazon könntet ihr diese Rucksäcke auf kaufen. 

Sollte es euch aber stören, wenn etwas sehr streng riecht, würde ich an eurer Stelle von diesen alten Exemplaren die Finger lassen. Da sie anscheinend schon lange gelagert wurden und aus großen Teilen aus LKW-Planen bestehen, riechen sie sehr stark. Das nur mal so am Rande. Ich bin mir aber sicher dass sich der Geruch irgendwann verflüchtigt.

Where to shop / pricepoint?
If my endless talking has made you interested, you probably want to know where I got it from, or where you can get it from. Before finding this backpack, I searched through about 50 pages of secondhand backpacks on Ebay Germany and stumbled about these DDR-military-backpacks a few times. So I typed the term "NVA Sturmgepäck" into the search bar by itself and picked one of the countless offers. Seems like there are a lot of these backpacks still out there. They haven't been burried under the Berlin Wall *ba dumm disch*...Ahhm anyways, I picked the cheapest one. I payed about 5€ for the backpack and 5€ for the postage, so about 10€ total. 

Which seller I chose in particular is actually irrelevant for you guys if you want to buy these on an Ebay other than the German version. When I tried to find these on Ebay.com (for researching purposes of this blog entry), nothing came out when typing in "NVA backpack", so I recommend you to search for something along the lines of "german DDR military backpack". 

Btw: If you have a sensitive nose or have a pet peeve when it comes to strong smells, you wouldn't like this backpack, because it sorta stinks after being stored for so many years. I'm sure the smell will go away after a while.

Ich bin so froh, diesen Rucksack gefunden zu haben. Er lässt alle meine Hipster- & Retro-Träume wahr werden und ist in letzter Zeit mein ständiger Begleiter. Jedes Mal, wenn ich nun in Versuchung gerate, einen neuen Rucksack zu kaufen, sagt mein Unterbewusstsein mir: Hey, du hast noch einen - und einen, der länger hält als der, findest du sowieso nie.

I am so glad to have found  this backpack. It  lets all my hipster- and retro-dreams come true and is  my faithful  companion  everytime my pale behind is leaving my apartment. Everytime a part of me wants to buy a new backpack now, my subconsious tells me: hey, you've got a good one now - and you won't find a more long-lasting one anyway.
