Upcycling : Birkenstock-Sandals

Diesmal geht es um 2 Paar Sandalen - das eine war ziemlich kaputt und musste "geflickt" werden, das andere hat einfach nur einen anderen Anstrich erhalten. Gemeinsamkeit: beide sind Secondhand und mit gebrauchten Materialien bearbeitet. Das spart nicht nur euer Geld, sondern wirkt auch gegen die Fast-Fashion Industrie und ihren Wegwerf-Trend. Dies sollen lediglich Vorschläge sein, wie man Sandalen aufwerten oder "upcyclen" kann - eurer Kreativität sind wie immer keine Grenzen gesetzt.

 Zum Schluss gebe ich euch noch Tipps, wo und wie ihr Birkenstocks gebraucht bekommt, aber auch neue, vegane Alternativen. Oder: wenn ihr wissen wollt wie ihr aussehen könnt wie eine junge Öko-Mutter, die ihre Söhne Avo und Cado an einem sonnigen Mittag aus der Kita abholt, dann lest weiter.

Version 1

Dieses Paar habe ich für 44€ auf ebay bekommen, was ein ziemlich guter Preis für Birkenstocks ist - besonders, wenn sich alle um die Teile kloppen , sobald der Sommer naht. Als sie bei mir ankamen, waren sie bereits ziemlich kaputt - die Ledersohle begann, sich von dem bröckeligen Kork darunter abzulösen. Ein bisschen sauer war ich schon auf den Typen, der Schuhe in einem solchen Zustand ohne Erwähnung in der Angebotsbeschreibung verkauft. Andererseits war es aber meine Schuld, nicht nach besseren Bildern gefragt zu haben. Naja. 

I got this dark-brown pair on ebay for 44€, which is a decent price for Birkenstocks - especially when everyone suddenly starts to hunt for these as soon as summer starts. When they arrived, however, they already looked pretty damaged - the leather sole started to seperate from the corc-material in the front and in the back of the shoes. I was a little mad at the guy to sell damaged shoes like this - but let's be real: I was stupid for not requesting more close-ups pictures of the item before buying.

Als ich nachgegoogelt habe, habe ich herausgefunden, dass viele Leute das Problem mit der separierenden Sohle bei ihren Birkenstocks haben, sobald diese älter werden. 

Birkenstock ist bekannt als Deutsche-Qualitätsmarke - hmm, für mich nun nicht mehr. Sie bieten zwar einen Reparaturservice an, aber a) ich war nicht bereits nochmal 40€ oder mehr zu bezahlen. 

b) hätten sie bei der Reparatur neues Leder verwendet, aber ich möchte nicht, dass mein Geld in die Taschen der Leder-Industry fliesst. 

Ich brauchte eine andere Lösung. Und nachdem ich mit meinem Rad gefallen und die Bremer Taufe* hinter mich gebracht hatte, sahen die Sohlen noch schlimmer aus als zuvor. Ich wollte jedoch 44€ und ein Paar ansonsten-gut erhaltene Schuhe in den Eimer werfen, also musste ich wohl selbst etwas tun.

When I googled if this was a common problem with Birkenstocks, I found how many people experienced the same sole-seperation issue when the sandals get older. The brand is known as a german-quality-brand...well, to me, they're not so much anymore. Birkenstock does offer a repair-service, but a) I didn't want to pay 40€ or more and b) they would use new leather for fixing the shoes, but I don't want my money into the pockets of the leather-industry.  I needed a different solution. And after falling down with my bike (undergoing the "Bremer Taufe"*), the soles looked even worse than before. I didn't want to throw 44€  and a pair of otherwise well-conditioned shoes into the bin, so  I had to take matters into my own hands.

(*für alle Nicht-Bremer: die Bremer-Taufe ist das, was passiert, wenn man hier mit dem Reifen seines Rades in den Straßenbahnschienen hängen bleibt und ohne ein graziles auf-die-Schnauze-legen nicht mehr herauskommt. Dies passiert hier öfter aufgrund der "kreativen" Infrastruktur innerhalb Bremens. Nun bin ich wohl endlich eine echte Bremerin)                                                                                                                                                        (*in my city, "Bremer Taufe" is jokingly said to be the initiation ritual for every citizen. It describes the situation in which you want to drive across the tram-rails with your bike but get stuck with the tire INBETWEEN the rails and can't get out without falling elegantly onto the street. This happens a lot due to the "creative" infrastructure around here. I'm a real Bremer now, I guess)^^

So sah die Sohle aus, nachdem ich sie zurück auf das übrig-gebliebene Kork-Material geklebt habe. Ich habe eine alte Tube UHU-Kraftkleber verwendet, nur leider konnte ich nirgens die Inhaltstoffe finden und euch somit nicht sagen, ob der Kleber vegan ist. Wenn ihr nach einem Kleber sucht, geht sicher dass er viele verschiedene Materi-alien kleben kann (in diesem Fall: Leder und Kork). 

Kleberreste habe ich mit Waschbenzin entfernt - meine Schwester hatte mir erzählt, dass Aceton möglicherweise das Gummi der Unterseite angreifen könnte.

This is how the shoes looked like after I started to glue the leather back onto the remaining corc material. I used an old tube of glue by UHU called "Kraftkleber"I found in my dad's garage - unfortunately, 
I wasn't able to find the ingredient list, so I don't know if it is vegan or not. If you are looking for a glue, it has to be one that can be used for many different materials (in my case: leather and corc). 
 The remaining glue can be removed with washing-petrol (is that how you call it in english?) - my sister told me that acetone could be to harsh for the rubber material at the bottom.

Exkurs: Eine Veganerin, die Leder trägt/benutzt?!

Die benutzen Lederstücke waren Teil der Sammlung meines Vaters. Sein Hobby war es, alles mögliche mit diesem Material zu kreieren oder reparieren. Er hat mir immer vorgeschwärmt, "wie gut man doch damit arbeiten kann". Seitdem ich aber weiss, wie es gewonnen wird, habe ich eine andere Sicht auf Leder und will es niemals wieder neu kaufen. Auf der anderen Seite wird durch einen Kauf von Secondhand-Teilen aus Leder die Nachfrage für das Material nicht angetrieben, weshalb ich auf dem Wege noch kaufe. Somit nutze ich auch lieber noch die alten Reste, die wir zuhause herumliegen haben, zur Reparatur, anstatt sie verstauben zu lassen. Jeder Veganer muss das mit sich selbst klären - aber euch steht natürlich frei, mit mir auch darüber zu diskutieren!

Excursus: a vegan who wears/uses leather?!

The leather pieces I used were part of my dad's collection. His hobby was to create and fix all sorts of things with this material. He always told me how "amazing it is to work with it". Since I know how it is obtained though, I have a very different view on it and never want to purchase anything new made from leather ever again. On the other hand, I have no problem with wearing it secondhand (because that doesn't support the demand for leather in our economy); or in this case: using left-over pieces to fix something. Every vegan has to discuss this question with themselves - but if you want to question my position, you're totally free to do so too!

Ich habe echt viele verschiedene Methoden versucht, um das kaputte Fußbett zu verdecken.

Es komplett mit Leder einzudecken hat nicht funktioniert, da es viel zu dick war, und ich Papa nie ausreichend zugeschaut habe, als er in seiner Werkstatt gearbeitet hat. Sonst hätte ich wohl gewusst, wie man Leder glatt um eine Kurve herum legt, anstatt diese Wellen zu bekommen. Ich brauchte also eine andere Idee...

I tried so many different things to cover the broken part of the sole. Covering it up completely with a piece of leather didn't work out because I used a piece that was way too thick (and I wasn't able to thin it out), plus I never watched well enough when my dad worked with leather material - because then I would have known how to cover a surface smoothly instead of getting a wavy texture like this. I needed a different idea...

Also nahm ich ein dünneres Leder und schnitt es zu Streifen. Mit ihnen konnte ich weitaus besser um die Kurve der Sohle arbeiten.

Ich habe außerdem eine ver-schnörkelte Form unter den Resten gefunden, die Papa wohl einmal in seine Arbeiten integriert hat. Diese habe ich auf ein anderes Leder übertragen, den Rand mit dunkel-braunem Faden genäht (sah meiner Meinung nach besser aus) und letztendlich alle kleinen Teile, die ich kreiert hatte, auf den Schuh.

Ich weiß noch nicht genau, wie gut das Ganze beim Tragen halten wird - spüren tut man as zusätzliche Leder jedoch nicht. Dafür, dass ich noch nie mit Schuhen gearbeitet hab, bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dem Resultat!

So I took a much thinner piece of leather and cut it into stripes. That way, I was able to work with the curve of the sole much better. I also found an interesting shape amongst the other left-over pieces of leather. My dad probably used it in one of his projects. I transfered it onto a different colored piece, stitched the cut-outs with dark-brown thread (looked better to me), and glued all the little pieces i've created onto the shoe.

I am not sure how well they will stick with wear, so I might have to re-glue them on. However, I barely feel the leather pieces when walking.  For never having worked with shoes before, I'm very please with the result!

Version 2

Meine Mama wusste, dass das Paar was ich auf Ebay gekauft hatte, ziemlich kaputt war - also hat die Liebe mir ein neues Paar Birkenstocks von einem Mann auf Ebay gekauft, der seinen Laden aufgegeben hat. Das ist nicht "gebraucht" im wirklichen Sinne, aber ich habe ich sehr darüber gefreut, dass meine Mutter meine Wünsche zu respektieren versucht.

My mom new that the pair I recently got were pretty damaged, so she got me a brand new pair by a guy who gave up his shop, on ebay as well. This isn't secondhand in the original sense, but I was so grateful that my mom tried to respect my wishes.

Nachdem ich jedoch mein anderes Paar "repariert" hatte, fand ich "blanke" Sandalen schon fast zu langweilig an mir. Um sie mir anzupassen, durchsuchte ich die Garage meines Vaters diesmal nach Garn und umwickelte den hinteren Riemen der Sandalen mit einer Weiß-Braunen-Variante. Ich mochte dies sehr und wiederholte den Vorgang bei den anderen Riemen, diesmal arbeitete ich jedoch alte Knöpfe mit ein. Zuerst habe ich Holzperlen versucht, fand das aber nicht so passend - es ist aber trotzdem eine einfache und süße Idee. 

After "repairing" my other pair though, I found that plain sandals wouldn't suit me anymore. To make them fit my style, I roamed my dad's garage for thread this time, and I wrapped the back strap with white-and-brown-colored variant. I loved the look and feel of it and repeated it with the other two straps as well, but this time working in some cool old buttons I found. First I tried wooden pearls but didn't like that so much - but it's a great and easy idea as well.

Diese Variante ist logischerweise viel einfacher als die Erste. Und das beste daran: man kann das Garn nach belieben wieder abnehmen und ändern, da kein Kleber involviert ist.

This version is obviously much easier than the first one. And the best aspect is that you can just remove the thread again since there is no glue involed.

1) Wo Birkenstocks gebraucht kaufen?

• Ebay, Shpock, Depop, Flohmärkte...ich habe sie in dieser Gegend noch nicht in Secondhandläden gesehen, also seid ihr im Internet wohl besser aufgehoben.
• Achtet unbedingt auf die Verfassung der Schuhe, besonders die der Sohle!
• Wenn ihr große Füße habt (so wie ich) und ein Männer-Exemplar im Auge habt, checkt ob es die weite Version ist. Ich habe (ausversehen) diese erwischt, somit sind die Schuhe mir etwas weit und haben mir zu Beginn Blasen beschert. Das Einlaufen hat es gebessert. Die, die meine Mama mir besorgt hat, sind die reguläre Version.

1) Where to get Birkenstocks secondhand?

• Ebay, shpock, depop, flea markets...I've never seen them in thrift shops around here, so check the www!
• please be cautious with the condition of the shoes (especially the soles!) We
• If you have big feet (like me) and plan to buy the men's version, check if it's the wide version or not. I (accidently) got the wide version - it's much more loose on my feet and caused me some blisters in the beginning, but now it's fine. The ones my mom got me are the regular version.

2) Wo bekommt man Upcycling-Material?

• Wenn ihr nicht das Glück habt, es zuhause (bei euch, Verwandten oder Freunden) herumliegen zu haben: viele Secondhandshops (in Bremen: das Fairkaufhaus Bemerkenswert am Schüsselkorb) verkaufen auch Näh-Utensilien und Stoffreste. 
• heutztage gibt es Mikrofaser-Wolle als Alternative zu echter Wolle in fast allen Läden
• Wenn ihr Leder nutzen wollt: verwendet Stücke aus alten Kleidungsstücken oder kauft diese gebraucht (So kam auch die Sammlung meines Vaters zusammen). Natürlich wäre Fake-Leder noch besser!
• Das Material sollte aber nicht zu dick sein, wenn ihr es auf die Sohle kleben wollt.

2) Where to get upcycling materials?

• If you don't have anything laying around at home or at your relatives'/friends': Many secondhandshops offer thread, buttons and fabric.
• If you can't/don't want to get your hands on secondhand wool-thread: most of the thread in shops out there is made from microfibre nowadays
• If you want to use leather, you can either use left-other from leather-jackets/shoes/bags you don't use anymore, or look for people selling their old stuff on ebay (which is where my dad got most of his collection). Of course, even better, you can use fake-leather! 
• If you want to glue something onto the soles, the material shouldn't be too thick 

3) Gibt es vegane Birkenstock-Alternativen?

Ja! Vegetarian-shoes (leider not sponsored, schön wärs) bieten Sandalen an, die sehr ähnlich aussehen. Diese kosten natürlich etwas mehr als secondhand-Ware, aber sind perfekt für die von euch die ungerne gebrauchte Sandalen tragen und in ein gutes Paar Schuhe investieren möchten.

3) Are there vegan Birkenstock-alternatives?
 

Yes! Vegetarian-shoes (not sponsored, i wish though) offer one that looks very similar. It's obviously a bit pricier than getting an old pair secondhand, but perfect for those who aren't comfortable wearing used sandals and want to invest into a good pair of shoes. Shops like "Deichmann" might offer shoes like this made from plastic as well.

So, da bin ich nun: stolz, mal wieder etwas mit meinen Händen gemacht zu haben, anstatt nur meine Zeit damit zu verbringen, Essays zu schreiben und zu lernen. Hoffentlich halten mir diese beiden Paare eine Weile!

Well, here I am: proud of myself for creating something with my own hands again instead of spending all my time writing essays and studying. I hope these shoes will last a while!
